A Medical Approach to Weight Loss and Metabolic Health

At Kass Precision Medicine, we look beyond the number on the scale – considering body composition, metabolic health, nutrition, exercise, sleep, hormones when relevant, and weight-loss medications when appropriate.

→ LOSE EXCESS FAT → PRESERVE MUSCLE → IMPROVE METABOLIC HEALTH → BUILD A STRATEGY YOU CAN MAINTAIN

Why Does Losing Weight Get Harder With Age?

Weight regulation is more complicated than calorie intake alone.

Changes in muscle mass, insulin sensitivity, appetite signaling, sleep, medications, activity, and hormonal health can all influence weight and body composition. The body also adapts to weight loss: hunger may increase while energy expenditure decreases.

Understanding these factors can help inform a more effective and sustainable approach.

Medical Weight Loss at Kass Precision Medicine

We evaluate weight history, body composition, metabolic health, medications, lifestyle, and treatment goals. When appropriate, testing may include glucose regulation, cardiovascular risk markers, thyroid function, sex hormones, and other metabolic or hormonal factors.

Treatment may combine nutrition, resistance and cardiovascular exercise, sleep and behavioral strategies, and prescription medication when medically appropriate.

EVALUATE → DEFINE THE GOAL → TREAT → PROTECT MUSCLE → MONITOR → MAINTAIN

Modern Weight-Loss Medications

GLP-1–based medications have changed medical weight management by targeting biological pathways involved in hunger, satiety, food intake, and glucose regulation. For appropriate patients, these medications can be highly effective. We view them as one component of a broader strategy for improving body composition and metabolic health.

What about newer weight-loss medications?
Research continues into emerging therapies, including investigational medications such as retatrutide.

Weight Loss Shouldn’t Mean Losing Muscle

The number on the scale doesn't tell the whole story. Preserving skeletal muscle is an important part of healthy weight loss, particularly in midlife and beyond.

Higher muscle mass is associated with better health and longevity, while low muscle mass is associated with poorer health outcomes - even after accounting for BMI.

Our approach emphasizes adequate protein, resistance training, and thoughtful medication dosing to lose excess fat while protecting muscle.

[PULL-OUT / DESIGN CALLOUT]

Body composition matters. Lower weight does not necessarily mean better health if muscle is lost along the way. (MARCI - PLEASE CREATE VISUAL CALL OUT FOR THIS)

Visceral Fat and Metabolic Health

Where excess fat is stored matters.

Visceral fat - fat stored deeper within the abdomen around internal organs - is strongly associated with insulin resistance and cardiometabolic disease, including:

  • Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • Abnormal triglycerides and cholesterol

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Metabolic liver disease

  • Obstructive sleep apnea

This is why we look beyond BMI alone. Waist circumference, body composition, blood pressure, laboratory markers, and overall metabolic health can provide a more complete picture.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. Is there clinical research supporting Emsella?

To date, there are five published studies on Emsella. According to clinical reports, 95% of patients reported a substantial improvement to their quality of life following Emsella treatments. 75% of patients reported using less urinary pads.

Q. How long does an Emsella treatment last?

Your treatment plan will be tailored for your specific needs. Treatment typically takes thirty minutes with most patients needing six sessions, scheduled twice a week.

Q. What does an Emsella treatment feel like?

Patients experience tingling and pelvic floor muscle contractions during the procedure - there is no reported pain or discomfort.

Q. Is there any downtime following an Emsella treatment?

You may resume daily activities immediately after the treatment.

Q. How quickly will I see results from BTL Emsella treatments?

You may notice improvement after a single session.  More typically, the results will continue to improve over the next few weeks.

Q. How long do the effects of Emsella treatments last?

The effects of the initial six-session treatment can last between 9-12 months. Touch-up sessions may be advised three or six months following the initial treatment, depending on each individual.

Q. Is Emsella better than pelvic floor therapy in treating urinary incontinence?

Because Emsella produces thousands of pelvic floor muscle contractions in a short amount of time, this treatment seems to be providing faster, more effective results than pelvic floor therapy.

Q. Will Emsella help treat mild pelvic floor prolapse?

Pelvic floor strengthening has been shown to help address mild to moderate types of pelvic floor prolapse.

Q. How much do Emsella treatments cost?

Treatment packages are customized depending on a patient’s specific needs.
